Turku was once devastated by severe battles and fires, which destroyed much of its legacy. Some remnants, such as Turku Castle, Turku Cathedral, and Luostarinmaki, have been carefully preserved and provide a peek into the past. The city combines ancient and contemporary features, with antiques concealed among modern structures and only revealed as we wander about.
The museum project is an interpretation of the spirit of Turku, as well as a dialogue between historical and contemporary aspects of the city. As a result, the concept is to create a form that resembles a gem cracked through a shell. Through these “cracks”, visitors can see Turku through various windows that alternate between the past and the present, from the ancient Turku Castle to the modern harbor.
The design drawing’s urban context analysis demonstrates that the building blocks are aligned reasonably evenly and create complete
and clean squares. The building mass is established by following the urban grid system in order to reconcile the building with the urban setting.
